Livelihood-related information is very important for the deprived, rural people of our country. Due to lake of proper and timely information, people often suffer a lot, while even minor information may change a person’s life sometimes. The project titled Ensuring Access to Information for Better Livelihood is trying to provide necessary information to the rural people under the project area through 21 Jonotottho Ghars (Information Centre) established in different areas within the country.

The motive is to create demand of information within the common people, so that they may become aware about the necessity of information and work as a pressure group for enactment of the Right to Information Law in the country. With this target, the information centres are providing livelihood-related information to the rural people and thus helping them. People are often coming to the information centres now-a-days and through the meetings of the information centres and by reading newspapers and other materials (information cards, booklets, Totther Golpo, posters etc.), people are getting necessary information that are effective for their lives. The team leaders, committee members and regular readers of the information centres are also providing necessary information to other peoples and helping them to build better future. Thus, simple information about free education facility for girls has changed a girl’s life in Kulaghat.Girls of Kulaghat Union under the Sadar district of Lalmonirhat did not use to go to school even a few days ago. The people thought that it is of no use sending girls to school; they are supposed to do the household works only. Moreover, the economic situation of the people of Kulaghat also remained an obstacle in the way of girls’ education at Kulaghat. Presently, the situation has been changed.

Different NGOs are organizing meetings/seminars for creating people’s awareness about women education and the government facilities provided for the girl children. MMC’s Kulaghat Jonotottho Ghar is also taking part in such awareness-building activities. The team leader, committee members and regular readers of the Information Centre are making the common people aware about taking their girls to school.

Ibrahim is a poor man with three wives and many children. Yet, he is leading very miserable life due to poverty. One of his daughters is a student of class nine and she is skilled in handicrafts also. Due to poverty, some days ago Ibrahim decided not to send her to school again. The team leader of Kulaghat information Centre heard this news and told him not to take such decision. The team leader said, “Government has made education free for girls up to HSC level. So, why you have to stop your daughter’s study?” Ibrahim became happy to know about this information and said that his daughter must continue her study as there is such opportunity. He has realized the importance of information in life and has appreciated the activities of the information centre. He said “If we can know about such livelihood-related information regularly, we may live better.” He has become aware about people’s right to information at the same time and he has said that he would provide this information to his relatives, naighbours and known persons so that they never take any wrong decision about the education of their girls. Now Ibrahim’s daughter is going to school regularly. A simple information from the team leader of Kulaghat information centre has changed her future.
